Beginner's Yoga - Intro to Chakras

Hiya, yogis and friends!


How is it that I have all of the time in the world, (thanks second wave!) and yet I still put things off until the last minute? It's because of the person that I am, and I'm coming to terms with it. Buuuuut, I am so excited to talk to you about my next series, Beginner's Yoga - Intro to Chakras! As always, I'm going to keep this short and sweet.



This is a 7 part series with one class per week for 7 weeks. Each class will include 40-45 minutes of beginner friendly yoga, and 15-20 minutes discussion about the chakras. Each class will be focused on and themed around one of the seven main chakras. This series is great for beginners that want to begin yoga, but don't know where to start. This series is also great for those yogis that have been practicing yoga, and are interested in learning more about other aspects while strengthening the foundation of their practice.


I've included some information on the chakras below about what they are and how they relate to you in your life. Chakras are very popular and I remember seeing photos of chakras, like the one I've included, long before I considered myself a yogi. Look for a more detailed schedule of this series at the end of this blog.

What is a Chakra?


Chakras are energy centers that are located along the spine. Energy is flowing throughout our bodies and these are major junctions. There are seven main chakras and they are depicted with different colors. The term "chakra" is a sanskrit term that translates to "wheel" or "disk". If the chakra is healthy and clear, energy flows through it easily. However, chakras can become blocked and the energy flow restricted.


The chakras are thought to be associated with physical, mental, and spiritual health. These swirling energy centers correspond to major nerve centers and vitals organs in the physical body. Usually these major nerve centers and vital organs are responsible for the hormones that regulate the same emotions associated with the chakra.


In this series we will discuss what each chakra represents, the feelings associated, and common blockages. Chakras can be discussed in great detail. Usually, I take two hour workshops on each one. The discussion in this series are designed to give you a basic understanding so you can be more aware and bring that knowledge into your life.




What if chakras aren't my thing?


This is feeling is something that really resonates with me. I have a degree in biological sciences, and I would consider myself a bit of a skeptic. I tend to look for the science behind something before even considering giving it a chance.


However; the ideas, feelings, and emotions associated with the chakras are all things that are important for mental and emotional wellbeing. Here are just a few of the topics we will discuss in this series:

  • safety

  • creativity

  • self-esteem

  • love

  • being heard

  • intuition

  • connection

So, even if you're not into the idea of chakras, I have no doubt you will benefit from the discussions. You'll be able to take the things we discussed and apply them to your life.


Story time!


A long time ago, when I had first stumbled into a yoga studio I was working in sales. Sometimes, communication is hard. The head office had decided to phase out our personal iPads and replace them with in store devices. However, the word that finally made it down to the employees on the floor was "don't play games on your iPad". In my down time I played a lot of word games and I was not happy about giving that up. So, to follow the rules, I started downloading books to my kindle. I went for free yoga books (because I had a terrible relationship with money that I have since improved). As soon as I finished one book I downloaded another, then another, then another. One of my first books was a basic yoga book, that took me to reading a book on the chakras. My first thought was "wow, isn't this crazy?" Then, I moved on to a kundalini book. I think I read 10 short books on yoga before I realized that I was actually interested and studying yoga.


My point is, even though this may not be something you think you're into, you may be surprised.
